In 1958, the Institute of Basic Medical Sciences (IBMS) of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences (CAMS) and the School of Basic Medicine (SBM) of Peking Union Medical College (PUMC) formerly known as the Institute of Experimental Medicine (IEM) of CAMS were established and renamed as the Institute of Basic Medical Sciences following its relocation from Jianyang County in Sichuan Province to Beijing. The earliest history of IBMS & SBM can be traced back to the establishment of the Departments of Basic Medicine of PUMC in 1917. Since its establishment, it has been committed to two major tasks: biomedical research and the medical education of undergraduate and graduate students of PUMC.
Centered on the major needs of the nation’s health, IBMS & SBM continues to undertake important tasks, offer advice and suggestions for building a great power in China’s science and technology, assume social responsibilities for improving national health, and provide the skills and resources necessary for the development of China’s medical and health industry. Through the ceaseless efforts of its faculty and staff, it has made a series of important advances in our understanding of the mechanisms of major diseases, rare genetic diseases, developmental and reproductive biology, innate immune signaling and regulation, neurology and neuroscience. Furthermore, it has introduced the Chinese national survey of health and basic physiological characteristics, established standards for nanotechnology, and conducted translational research into cell therapies and drugs.
Today, IBMS & SBM focuses on China’s national health strategy, optimizing the layout of core research areas, training large numbers of basic medicine experts whose talents are urgently needed, and strengthening science and technology strategy by forming a state-level laboratory and resource network. Based on our strategy of advocating an innovative spirit and making concerted efforts, it aims to stand at the leading edge of China’s medical technology innovation system and be the primary driver of “double first-class” innovation in medical education. In this way, we seek to enhance basic research in China and consolidate the country’s self-reliance and strength in medical science and technology.
