The former Institute of Experimental Medicine was moved back to Beijing with the approval of the State Council and then merged with basic medicine group (belonged to former Peking Union Medical University). With twelve research laboratories, the Institute was renamed as Institute of Basic Medicine. The Institute was responsible for almost all of undergraduate preclinical courses. Served as Department of Basic Medicine of Peking Union Medical College of China, it also claimed responsibility for most of the basic medical courses offered by Graduate School designed for postgraduates of all schools. Eight more departments were added in addition to the original twelve research departments.
