Professor Wang Qianben from IBMS Receives SBUR Meritorious Achievement Award
release time: 2026-04-09

On November 15, 2025 (local time), the 33rd Annual Meeting of the Society for Basic Urologic Research (SBUR) was held in Orlando, Florida, USA. Professor Wang Qianben, Executive Dean of the Institute of Basic Medical Sciences (IBMS) of Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences (CAMS)/School of Basic Medicine (SBM) of Peking Union Medical College (PUMC), received the SBUR Meritorious Achievement Award.

As one of the most long-standing and academically recognized individual achievement awards in the field of urologic research, the SBUR Meritorious Achievement Award is presented annually to only one recipient, with past winners mostly being leading figures of international influence in urology. A total of 21 scientists with international reputations in basic and translational research in urology have won this award successively since its establishment in 2005.

The research group led by Professor Wang Qianben has long focused on gene regulation in urologic tumors such as prostate cancer. His work has systematically clarified the key roles of critical transcription factors, such as the androgen receptor and pioneer transcription factors, in driving lethal prostate cancer, laying an important foundation for research on gene transcription and epigenetics in this field. Based on his work, Professor Wang pioneered the transformation of traditionally “undruggable” transcriptional and post-transcriptional regulatory factors into intervenable RNA therapeutic targets, and developed precision RNA therapeutic strategies based on RNA-targeted editing and nano-delivery systems. Professor Wang has also been engaged in the formulation of strategic planning, organization of academic conferences and cultivation of young talents in international urologic societies, playing a significant role in the disciplinary development and international cooperation in basic and translational urologic research. Professor Wang is an outstanding representative of overseas talents introduced by IBMS in recent years. Upholding the principle that “talent is a key resource for advancing education and sci-tech development”, the institute has successfully attracted, retained and utilized a group of high-level overseas talents by adhering to discipline-led development and targeted talent recruitment, thereby striving to promote the integrated development of education, science and technology, and talents.
