Center for Experimental Animal Research (CEAR)

Center for Experimental Animal Research (CEAR) is one of the major technical platforms for life science research in Institute of Basic Medical Sciences (IBMS), Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences (CAMS). Partly supported by national fund, CEAR currently occupies over 1400 m2 space, consisting of 800 m2 SPF areas that equipped with individual ventilation cage (IVC) to house transgenic/knockout mouse colonies. IVC system has several advantages, including low energy consumption, environmental protection, easy maintenance and low running cost, with better safety condition, promoted stability and increased reproducibility of animal experiments. Currently, CEAR is housing for over 20000 small animals, such as SPF mice, nude mice, etc.

CEAR has set up a behavior test laboratory equipped with morris maze, six-arm- and Y-maze, rotating rod, grip strength test, step through test and step down test to evaluate learning and memory, deprementia model and motor coordination. Also, the lab serves as a purpose to study brain ischemia and reperfusion, mitochondria injury and to screen anti-dysphoria drugs for neurological disorders. By the end of 2010, CEAR established several laboratories for transgenic/knockout mouse models, small animal imaging equipped with microinjection apparatus, small animal fluorescence imaging system and Vevo ultra-sonic imaging system to evaluate model animal’s physiological and biochemical functions in a dynamic and quantitative manner.
